House on a Pillar

carbon-neutral compact dwelling

The site, an old bridge pillar in the Grand River, was selected for its prominence in the city because of the house’s ability to set a high standard of sustainable living not only in Cambridge but in Ontario as a whole. The functions of the house are entirely self-contained - power is provided by combination of a micro hydro turbine and PV panels, and waste is handled by a living machine. Structural thermoplastic timber and a sealed, concrete lower level mitigate any damaging effects of flooding.

Galt Hotel

hotel/spa/restaurant

The entire building is organized along an enclosed internal street and an external street servicing the various programs. Where one rises the other falls, offering multiple vistas along the length of the building.

Stacked in between the two streets are cells of hotel rooms, punctuated at each stair landing with gardens in place of a room. Two living walls grow from the spa at the bottom of the atrium to the top floor.

Eucleptella Light Shelter

Modular installation using common objects

Drawing inspiration from the deep-sea Euplectella sponge, the installation uses the structural stability of the hexagonal cell to create a rigid shell using an inherently weak material – paper.

At the same time it captures the luminous qualities of the sea sponge, and provides a sheltered meditative space within from the busy activity outside.

Large Urban Building

Naked Chalet

Naked Retreats – Moganshan, China

The chalet is designed to immerse the guests in the rich landscape of Moganshan – 180 degrees of floor to ceiling glass frame views of the valley, while a solid rammed earth wall embeds the chalet in the mountainside.

An environmentally conscious design philosophy includes the employment of SIREwall made with local aggregate, in addition to other sustainable strategies.

As a third variant of the Hakka dwelling-inspired guest houses, this chalet is suited for couples or employees away for a staff retreat.

Shikumen house renovation

Shikumen lane houses are a vital aspect of Shanghai’s heritage, and this project aims to preserve these historically significant structures while transforming the interior for a modern lifestyle.

While much of the ground floor was preserved, the master bedroom’s cathedral ceiling was fully made use of by installing a new mezzanine level, freeing up the bottom level for a more comfortable space.

York Community Centre

A 3D model of the project, including landscape and detailed interior was created to aid in the design of various exterior and interior elements, which were then drafted and assembled for a 50% costing package.

Falls Amphitheatre

SSEF competition entry 2009

Located at the edge of the cliffs facing Niagara Falls, the location and form of the structure emphasize the forces of tension which run through it. Anchored delicately at the base, the structure is supported solely by tension cables.

The theatre addresses the site as a whole, by acting as a viewing platform for the Falls, a theatre for the park, and a bench for the road.
